Homework:
Since it is a short holiday week, there is no homework sheet.  Please encourage your child to read regularly.  The next homework sheet will go home on Thursday, November 29.

Second Quarter Changes:
For the first quarter, all classroom math and reading assessments were read orally to help students transition into testing and receiving academic grades for the first time.  As we enter the second quarter, these assessments will no longer be read aloud to students.  As students get use to this adjustment, you may see a slight drop in your child's test grades.  Please encourage your child to take his or her time, read each question carefully, and check back over his or her work before turning in each test.

Lexia:
This past week we introduced the idea of weekly Lexia goals.  Each student has two goals for the week: a time goal and a unit goal (puzzle pieces).  If a student is focused during the time he or she is on Lexia, then the unit goal should be met if the time goal is met.  Students know to "x out" and pick another category if they have a red apple, which means they need teacher help, and to see how close their green bar on the bottom is so they can quickly finish, if needed, before they logout.  Also, it is very important that a child not get help from others during a session.  Although I try to schedule adequate time during class for students to meet their weekly goal, some students could benefit from additional time at home to ensure all second grade language skills are mastered before third grade.  If your child is able to access Lexia at home, make sure you go through the Bookman Road media center website (http://jaharris6.wixsite.com/breslibrary) and click on Lexia.  You may need to enter my email address when logging in your child for the first time.

What are We Learning This Week?
Math:

Topic 6 Envisions: This unit will focus on adding two-digit numbers using mental math (ex. 24 + 31 = ?).
Literacy:
This week, we will start a new story from our Treasures textbook, Music of the Stone Age, on page 392.  Use the questions on page 395 to discuss the story with your student.  Our phonics skills will use the letter combinations of -oy and oi.

Unit of Study:
We will continue our new unit, Hear Their Voices: The student will demonstrate an understanding of cultural contributions made by people from the various regions in the United States. Diverse cultures have contributed to our nation’s heritage. To understand cultural differences and appreciate diverse ideals and values within his or her community, the student will utilize the knowledge and skills set forth in the following indicators:
- Compare the historic and cultural traditions of various regions in the United States and recognize the ways that these elements have been and continue to be passed across generations.
- Recognize the cultural contributions of Native American tribal groups, African Americans, and immigrant groups.
- Recall stories and songs that reflect the cultural history of various regions in the United States, including stories of regional folk figures, Native American legends, and African American folktales.
